COVID-19 may have canceled the West End St. Patrick’s 5k but it couldn’t stop about one-third of the runners from participating in the 12th annual event via a virtual running of the race. More than 275 of the 813 registered runners opted to run a “virtual 5k” on a measured course, on a treadmill, using a GPS, or by simply estimating the 3.1 mile distance. Runners submitted their times electronically and sent photos of themselves in their festive green garb.
The race raises close to $17,000 each year for neighborhood development and beautification of the West End Theatre District. The 2021 race is scheduled for March 21.
“We appreciate the support of our runners,” says Race Director Michael Drabenstott. “We hope to see them back next year for what will be an extra-special celebration.”
Registration for the 13th annual race, March 21, 2021, will open in October.
